Glutathione 500mg is reduced glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, supplied in one pre-filled research pen. Every glutathione pen is prepared to order in the UK and shipped cold chain by tracked delivery.
Glutathione is the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in animal cells and a standard reagent in redox research. Our research compound guide covers related compounds, including NAD+, another central cofactor in cellular redox chemistry.
How glutathione is studied
Glutathione is made in two enzyme steps, by glutamate-cysteine ligase and glutathione synthetase, and its unusual gamma-glutamyl bond protects it from most peptidases. The cysteine thiol lets it switch between reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) forms, and the GSH/GSSG ratio is widely used as a marker of cellular redox state. Enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases use it to neutralise peroxides and conjugate reactive compounds.
5 key research areas
- Biosynthesis. Studies examine glutamate-cysteine ligase, glutathione synthetase and the supply of cysteine as controls on cellular glutathione levels.
- Redox buffering. The GSH/GSSG ratio is measured as an indicator of oxidative stress in cell and tissue models.
- Peroxide and xenobiotic handling. Glutathione peroxidases and S-transferases use glutathione to reduce peroxides and conjugate reactive compounds.
- Redox signalling. S-glutathionylation of protein cysteines is studied as a reversible way of regulating protein activity.
- Measurement methods. Reviews compare assays for measuring reduced and oxidised glutathione in biological samples.

What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in animal cells. It is studied in redox biology, oxidative stress models and detoxification enzyme research. Apexion supplies it for laboratory research only.
What is the difference between GSH and GSSG?
GSH is reduced glutathione, the form supplied here. GSSG is oxidised glutathione, made when two GSH molecules are joined by a disulfide bond. The ratio of the two is a common marker of cellular redox state.
How much glutathione is in each pen?
Each pen contains 500 mg of reduced glutathione in one pre-filled research pen. Every pen comes from a single batch and carries its batch number.
Is glutathione independently tested?
Every glutathione pen is made fresh after your order is placed, so each one is prepared and quality checked to order rather than taken from old stock. Independent third-party testing of glutathione is under way, and the batch Certificate of Analysis will be published as soon as the results are verified. Each pen carries a batch number, so its documentation can be traced.
Can glutathione be used in humans or animals?
No. This product is not a medicine and is not licensed by the MHRA. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research, and is not for human or veterinary use, diagnosis or treatment.
How should glutathione be stored?
Glutathione is shipped cold chain. On arrival, keep the pen sealed and store it at −20 °C for long-term storage, away from heat and direct light. Handle it as little as possible and follow any batch-specific guidance supplied with your order.
