Research Use Only
SS-31 50mg (elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, that targets the inner mitochondrial membrane, supplied in one pre-filled research pen. Every SS-31 pen is prepared to order in the UK and shipped cold chain by tracked delivery.
SS-31 belongs to the Szeto-Schiller family of cell-permeable peptides and is one of the most studied mitochondria-targeted compounds. Read our SS-31 research overview, or compare it with MOTS-c and NAD+ in MOTS-c vs SS-31 vs NAD+.
How SS-31 is studied
SS-31 carries alternating aromatic and basic amino acids, which let it cross cell membranes and concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane. There it binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid that supports the structure of the electron transport chain. Cell and animal studies have examined its effects on mitochondrial swelling, reactive oxygen species, ATP production and the energetics of aged skeletal muscle.
5 key research areas
- Cardiolipin binding. Studies examined how SS-31 interacts with cardiolipin and how this affects cristae structure and electron transport.
- Oxidative stress models. Early cell and animal work studied SS-31 in models of mitochondrial swelling, oxidative cell death and ischaemia-reperfusion.
- Mitochondrial energetics. Kidney ischaemia models examined ATP production and mitochondrial respiration in the presence of SS-31.
- Aged skeletal muscle. Mouse studies measured mitochondrial energetics and muscle performance in aged animals.
- Protein interaction mapping. Cross-linking mass spectrometry mapped the mitochondrial proteins that SS-31 interacts with.

What is SS-31?
SS-31, also called elamipretide, is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide that concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds cardiolipin. It has been studied in cell and animal models of mitochondrial function. Apexion supplies it for laboratory research only.
What is the difference between SS-31 and MOTS-c?
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide designed to target the inner mitochondrial membrane. MOTS-c is a natural 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA that is studied mainly in metabolic signalling. Both are supplied for research use only.
How much SS-31 is in each pen?
Each pen contains 50 mg of SS-31 in one pre-filled research pen. Every pen comes from a single batch and carries its batch number.
Is SS-31 independently tested?
Every SS-31 pen is made fresh after your order is placed, so each one is prepared and quality checked to order rather than taken from old stock. Independent third-party testing of SS-31 is under way, and the batch Certificate of Analysis will be published as soon as the results are verified. Each pen carries a batch number, so its documentation can be traced.
Can SS-31 be used in humans or animals?
No. This product is not a medicine and is not licensed by the MHRA. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research, and is not for human or veterinary use, diagnosis or treatment.
How should SS-31 be stored?
SS-31 is shipped cold chain. On arrival, keep the pen sealed and store it at −20 °C for long-term storage, away from heat and direct light. Handle it as little as possible and follow any batch-specific guidance supplied with your order.
